Places to visit during your stay.

Foresters Lodge is ideally situated for exploring Loch Ness and the Scottish Highlands. There are plenty of wonderful places within easy reach for a day out – you may just have to come back again to see them all.

Urquhart Castle sits on the shores of Loch Ness and is one of area’s most famous landmarks. The castle offers spectacular views across the loch and is especially atmospherics in winter. Located near Drumnadrochit, it makes a wonderful day trip from Foresters Lodge.

Fort Augustus – is a charming Highland village at the southern end of Loch Ness, around 17 miles from Foresters Lodge. It’s ideal for a relaxed 2–3 hour visit, where you can watch boats pass through the Caledonian Canal locks, enjoy boat trips on Loch Ness, stroll along the waterfront, and take in the peaceful scenery.

Highlights

● 🚤 Watch boats pass through the Caledonian Canal locks

● ⛴️ Take boat trips on Loch Ness

● ☕ Enjoy cafés and local places to eat and drink

● 🌄 Stroll along the waterfront and enjoy the scenery

There are several cafés and places to eat or drink while enjoying views of the loch and surrounding hills.

Best time to visit: Late morning to mid-afternoon, when the canal is most active and most cafés are open. Summer is busier, while spring and autumn are quieter.

Parking: A large public car park is available in the village, just a short walk from the canal and main attractions.

With its cafés, small shops, and beautiful setting, Fort Augustus is a great day trip and a perfect base for exploring the wider Highlands.

Dolpin watching Chanonry Point on the Black Isle. Chanonry Point on the Black Isle is one of the best-known places in Scotland to watch bottlenose dolphins from the shore.

The dolphins can often be seen close to the beach, particularly around a rising tide. There are no guarantees with wildlife, of course, but the spectacular setting makes Chanonry Point well worth a visit.

Tip: Check the tide times before setting off and allow plenty of time, as the area can be busy during the summer months

Fairy Glen Waterfalls Rosemarkie – A lovely woodland walk through the Fairy Glen Nature Reserve, leading to two picturesque waterfalls. The peaceful trail follows a burn through the woods and is especially beautiful when the wildflowers are out.

It’s a relatively short walk and combines very nicely with a visit to Chanonry Point, making the two an excellent day trip from Foresters Lodge.

Tip: The path can be muddy and slippery after wet weather, so sensible footwear is recommended.

Falls of Foyers. Just a few miles from Foresters Lodge, the Falls of Foyers are one of the most impressive natural sights on the quieter south side of Loch Ness. The waterfall plunges into a dramatic wooded gorge and can be viewed from several viewpoints reached by a woodland path.

There are quite a few steps, particularly on the way back up, but you don’t need to walk the whole route to enjoy the scenery.

Tip: Good footwear is recommended, especially after rain when the paths and steps can be slippery.
